Ductless Mini-Splits: An Easy Answer for the Comfort Needs of Retrofits and New Additions

Ductless mini-splits were designed to deliver conditioned airflow to various spaces where other air conditioning options were impractical. This kind of flexibility makes choosing ductless mini-splits for retrofits and new additions an easy answer for home improvement projects. Plus you'll enjoy zoned comfort control.

Low-Profile Installation

Ductless mini-splits are installed with three low-profile components.

  • The compressor/condenser cabinet is installed outside the home on a concrete pad, paver stones or to the exterior wall of the home. You may also select a ductless system that uses digital inverter-driven compressors for substantially quieter operation compared to compressors in central systems.
  • The indoor components of ductless systems are the air handling units (AHUs). There are several installation options for the AHU, including concealed, recessed and universal mounting. Select the one that will best serve your retrofit or new addition.
  • The third component is the conduit that connects the outdoor unit to the indoor AHU. This contains the refrigerant lines, condensate tubing and power source. In advanced ductless systems, the conduit may extend more than 100 feet, offering homeowners the freedom to install the outdoor unit for greatest efficiency and aesthetics.

Zoned Temperature Control

Each air handling unit of a ductless mini-split provides zoned temperature control from other conditioning systems in the home, including other AHUs in a ductless multi-split system. Zoned temperature control provides maximum comfort to your retrofit or new addition on an as-needed basis. It also helps save energy too.

If you're retrofitting an attic space, for instance, you may find room temperatures vary greatly from temperatures in the other areas of the home. With a ductless mini-split, you can condition the retrofitted area to your exact comfort preference without affecting other rooms.
