Spring Hill, a city that lies in two Kansas counties, Johnson County and Miami County, is a community-oriented city that places the focus on family and features a top-notch school system. The city's dual goal is to retain the historic character for which it is known while looking toward the future and embracing the challenges that continued growth will bring.

History

Spring Hill, which started out as a small rural community, enjoys an interesting and varied history. In 1857, James B. Hovey staked a claim to the land. Hovey had decided that the patch of ground, which was conveniently located between the cities of Olathe and Paola and which enjoyed a rich stock of natural resources, including both timber and water, would make the perfect location for a town. Hovey named the town after the Alabama town of the same name, and Spring Hill was incorporated in 1857. Various buildings soon began popping up around town, starting with the Spring Hill Hotel, built by Hovey in 1857. Next came the town's post office, of which Hovey became the first postmaster. In 1858, the first store and the first Methodist church opened their doors. The town's and the state's first female doctor, Celia Ann Dayton, moved to Spring Hill from Vermont in 1859. Dr. Dayton is reported to have been involved in the underground railroad.
