Prairie Village is the creation of developer Jesse Clyde Nichols, who specialized in constructing master-planned communities. Construction began in 1941 and Prairie Village was officially recognized as a city in 1951. The National Association of Homebuilders named it the Best Planned Community in 1949. For 16 years, the city has earned the designation Tree City USA.

Geography and Climate

Situated in Johnson County, Kansas, Prairie Village sits a few miles west of the Kansas-Missouri state line. It covers 6.21 square miles and sits 988 feet above sea level.

The climate favors hot summers and cold winters. Average summer temperatures are in the 80s; highs in July top out at 90.5 degrees. Annual humidity levels average 79.9 percent. In 2010, the population of Prairie Village numbered 21,447, a decline of 2.83 percent from the 2000 census. Its population density of 3,451.12 residents per square mile ranks sixth among Kansas communities that report density statistics. The median age is 41.4 years old.

The average household size is 2.18; the average family size is 2.82. Almost 65 percent of residents were born in another state.

Housing values, at a median value of $206,900, are higher than state and national values. Most of the housing units, the majority of which have three or four bedrooms, were built between 1950 and 1959. Renters pay a median of $1,052.

The education index for residents is 15.66; this compares to 13.66 for the state and 13.39 nationally. More than 38 percent of residents hold a bachelor’s degree; 24.85 percent hold a master’s, doctoral or other professional degree.

Predominantly a white-collar city, 58 percent of residents work in management and business; an additional 25.5 percent work in sales and office occupations. Median household income according to the 2010 Census is $81,343; median family income is $101,633. About 2 percent of families live below the poverty level, compared to national and state statistics of 10.08 and 13.82, respectively.

Primary public education includes two elementary and one middle school through the Shawnee Mission Public Schools Unified School District. Upper classmen attend Shawnee Mission East High School, where the average ACT score for 2011-12 was 25.5. Private education is available through Kansas City Christian School.
