History

In 1825, the land that includes present-day Mission was given to the Shawnee Indian tribe. The Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 ended the agreement with the Shawnees, and the land was opened to white settlers. The Santa Fe Trail, which wound through Mission, became the westward wagon route. Mission was an ideal watering stop because of the clear, cool spring water that bubbled to the surface. Called Mission Hill Acres in 1926, the name was shortened to Mission on the recommendation of the U.S. Postal Service.
