History of Lenexa

James Butler Hickok, who would later be known as Wild Bill Hickok, claimed a small area of land in Lenexa before the city was developed. Lenexa was founded 12 years later in 1869 and is believed to be named after the Shawnee Indian chief's widow, who was known as Na-Nex-Se Blackhoof or Len-Ag-See Blackhoof. The city was later incorporated in 1907 during a period of heavy European immigration. Today, Lenexa is one of the most popular suburbs in Kansas City for families and young adults.

Population and Demographics

Lenexa is one of the fastest-growing cities in the Kansas City metropolitan area. In 1970, the town had just 5,242 residents. However, the city grew dramatically over the next decade, and 18,639 residents lived in Lenexa by 1980. Most recently, the city grew by nearly 20 percent between the years of 2000 and 2010 when the population increased from 40,238 residents to 48,330 residents. Nearly 35 percent of Lenexa households include children under the age of 18 years old.

Though the city has a few private schools, Lenexa does not have its own public school district. Lenexa students attend schools in the nearby Shawnee Mission, Olathe or De Soto school districts.
