Leawood KS: First Johnson County Subdivision Incorporated as a City

The city of Leawood, which is located in Johnson County, Kansas, is a suburb of Kansas City, Missouri. The city, situated about 10 miles southwest of downtown KCMO, is officially part of the Kansas City Metropolitan Area, which is comprised of 15 Kansas and Missouri counties. Leawood has been ranked the second most livable city in the state of Kansas and has been recognized for its high per-capita income, low crime rate, stable housing market and abundance of amenities, making it a worthwhile place to live or visit.

Area History

Leawood is named for Oscar G. Lee, a retired police officer who arrived in the area from Oklahoma in 1922, determined to fulfill his dreams by purchasing the land that has since become modern-day Leawood. Building on the historic foundation laid by the Native American tribes that first settled the land and the early American and French explorers and pioneers, such as Daniel Boone, who struggled to tame the wilderness, Oscar Lee established what was destined to become a thriving town.

When the Kroh brothers built a housing development in the town in 1948 and then established the infrastructure needed to serve the area, Leawood finally had the required amenities to become the first subdivision incorporated as a city in Johnson County. Since that time, Leawood has enjoyed rapid and prosperous growth.

At the town's incorporation, the spelling of Lee was changed to "Lea" — a spelling intended to reflect the beauty of the area's meadowlands. This "new" name helped create an even more pleasing image for the town, since "lea," when combined with "wood," was obviously meant to call to mind an even lovelier pastoral scene. Today, the town still retains much of the natural beauty its name conveys.

Demographic figures indicate that consistent growth and prosperity are the norm in Leawood KS. At $120,634, the town's 2011 estimated median household income was nearly 2-1/2 times that of the state of Kansas as a whole, and its 2011 estimated median house or condo value of $384,916 was over three times that of the rest of the state.
