Leavenworth KS: First Incorporated City in the State

Leavenworth, largest city in the state of Kansas, is the county seat of Leavenworth County. The area is home to Webster University's Fort Leavenworth campus, the University of St. Mary (USM), and the Kansas City Kansas Community College Leavenworth Center.

Area History

Founded in 1854 — the first incorporated city in the state of Kansas — Leavenworth was named for Fort Leavenworth, the oldest continuously operational military installation west of the Mississippi River and one that has since become known as the "Post that Opened the West." The fort's history stretches back to 1827, when it was known as Cantonment Leavenworth. The Leavenworth name is credited to Colonel Henry Leavenworth, who was responsible for the original establishment of the fort. Known as the "Intellectual Center of the Army," Fort Leavenworth is home to the US Army's Combined Arms Center (CAC) and serves as one of the country's main sub headquarters for its US Army Training and Doctrine Command. Like the city itself, Fort Leavenworth offers a variety of historical exhibits to foster an appreciation, in both residents and visitors, of the area's historical roots.

Geography

Located just 25 miles northwest of Kansas City MO, on the west bank of the Missouri River, Leavenworth is part of the Kansas City (MO) Metropolitan Area, which consists of a collection of 15 adjacent Kansas and Missouri counties that straddle the border between the two states. Leavenworth KS is situated immediately south of Fort Leavenworth in the upper northeastern portion of the state.

Population/Demographics

Boasting a population of 35,816, Leavenworth's gender breakdown is 54 percent male to 46 percent female. Median resident age in the city is just under 35, compared to a median age of 43 for the entire state of Kansas. The area enjoys a low population density, at 1524 people per square mile.

Local Activities and Attractions

The Leavenworth Convention & Visitors Bureau provides visitors with guidance to local activities, attractions and events, announcing all the latest happenings in the area and presenting a convenient events calendar to make it easy to plan your stay. Historic attractions, such as the Frontier Army Museum, located at Fort Leavenworth, and the Richard Allen Cultural Center, Carroll Mansion, and Parker Carousel Museum in Leavenworth proper, provide a wealth of opportunity to explore the area's history. The city also features attractions such as the Carnegie Arts Center, a popular twice-weekly farmer's market and a variety of other activities to make your visit memorable.

Climate

Due to its unique location between two North American climate zones — the humid subtropical and humid continental zones — Leavenworth's transitional climate typically brings hot, humid summers and cold, dry winters. The city's average July high runs a toasty 90 degrees F, with the average January low dropping to a chilly 19 degrees F. June is the wettest month of the year in Leavenworth, bringing close to 6 inches of precipitation to the area.
