Laid out in 1857, Kansas City was formed from lands purchased from their original Wyandot Indian owners. According to Pennsylvania surveyor John H. Miller, who drew up the map, a city company consisting of seven stockholders, three of whom were Wyandots, was established at that time. When lots were advertised for sale in the area, people came in droves, fueling the township's rapid growth. In 1886, the current municipality was created by the consolidation of Kansas City with three other independent municipalities, all located east of the Kansas River and all of which had been annexed to the city: Wyandotte, Armourdale, and Armstrong.
