Area History

Laid out in 1857, Kansas City was formed from lands purchased from their original Wyandot Indian owners. According to Pennsylvania surveyor John H. Miller, who drew up the map, a city company consisting of seven stockholders, three of whom were Wyandots, was established at that time. When lots were advertised for sale in the area, people came in droves, fueling the township's rapid growth. In 1886, the current municipality was created by the consolidation of Kansas City with three other independent municipalities, all located east of the Kansas River and all of which had been annexed to the city: Wyandotte, Armourdale, and Armstrong.

Kansas City KS is located in eastern Wyandotte County, at the junction of the Kansas and Missouri Rivers, and is separated from Kansas City MO by the Missouri River. As of the 2010 U.S. Census, approximately 78 percent of residents age 25 and over were high school graduates, with 14.5 percent holding a bachelor's degree or higher. To help facilitate the area's educational opportunities, the city is home to the University of Kansas Medical Center, Brown Mackie College Kansas City and Kansas City Kansas Community College.
