Independence MO Ductless Air Conditioning

Fifteen miles east of Kansas City, situated on the south bank of the Missouri River, Independence MO is part of the Greater Kansas City Metropolitan Area. With a population of about 120,000 and a total area of about 90 square miles, it was former President Harry S. Truman's hometown. Independence is also home to many denominations of The Latter Day Saints.

The area that is now Independence was originally populated by Missouri and Osage Indians, followed by early Spanish and French settlers. After the city was founded in 1827, it quickly became a frontier town and was nicknamed the "Queen City of the Trails" because the California, Oregon and Santa Fe trails all originated there.

A contingent of The Latter Day Saints, headed by Joseph Smith, Jr., arrived in 1831. Smith decided that his congregation's Temple of the New Jerusalem should be built in Independence, but earlier settlers forced the group out in 1833. In 1867, they returned to the area and eventually established their headquarters there.

From 1830 through 1868, Independence enjoyed great prosperity by assisting pioneers who were heading west along one of the three trails. However, the town suffered setbacks during the Civil War and never regained its former glory. In the meantime, Kansas City became the new local activity hub, although Independence remains the Jackson County Seat.

Former U.S. President Harry S. Truman and his wife Bess both grew up in Independence. After serving as Vice-President and then completing two terms as U.S. President, Mr. Truman and the former First Lady returned to Independence. The Harry S. Truman National Historic Site, which includes his former home and farm, is a local landmark.

The city has a population of approximately 120,000 with about 50,000 households. Thirty percent of the households include kids under 18, and almost 80 percent of the households are either married couples living together or singles. Median resident age is about 40 years old, and median household income is about $47,000 per year.

The most popular event is the SantaCaliGon Days Festival on Labor Day Weekend. It began in 1940 and has been going strong ever since. The event celebrates the city's history as a westward departure point. The name, Santa-Cali-Gon stands for the Santa Fe, California and Oregon trails. The festivities include gospel music, crafts, food and a carnival. The Vaile Strawberry Festival is held on the first Saturday of June at Vaile Mansion. Fresh strawberries are the order of the day, and the homemade treats include strawberry ice cream, strawberry floats and strawberry shortcake.
